Jon Popham has been a visual instructor with the Blue Knights since 2013.  Jon’s drum corps career began in 2009 marching trumpet with the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps, which is where he aged-out in 2010. Jon was on the visual staff with the Glassmen for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Jon has also worked with WGI Independent World groups, Cap City Percussion and Rhythm X Winds.

Jon has been the visual caption head for the Williamstown High School “Band of Spirit” since 2009. While holding this position at Williamstown, the band has been a Kentucky Music Educators Association state finalist each year and earned the Class A State Championship in 2009 and 2014; the “Band of Spirit” has also been a BOA Regional Class Champion and Grand Nationals “Class A” Runner-up. Jon is also an active clinician and designe

r for many high school bands throughout Kentucky, Ohio, South Carolina, and Mississippi. In the fall of 2018, Jon had the privilege of designing for the Arkansas Tech University Band of Distinction.

Jon resides in Florence, Kentucky. He is a Special Education (Learning and Behavior Disabilities) teacher at Williamstown Independent Schools and a 2012 graduate from the University of Kentucky.

Danielle Dilks – Color Guard Caption Head


Danielle is excited to start her 9th year with Hawthorne Caballeros and third year as a caption head.

Danielle started her career with Upper Darby HS and expanding her marching experience to DCI & DCA with Jersey Surf, Glassmen, and Hawthorne Caballeros. Danielle’s WGI experience was with ComplXity, and Black Watch Independent World Guard. She was a member of Black Watch for their audition for America’s Got Talent and a staff member with the group for Contemporary Color.

Danielle has taught groups including Jersey Surf, Black Watch, and various local marching bands and winter guards in the PA/NJ area. She is excited for her second season as a technician with AMP World Guard. Danielle resides in Broomall, PA and is a HR Representative for a National Transportation company.

IAN HALE (Front Ensemble Arranger)

Ian Hale received degrees in percussion performance from the University of Calgary and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst where his teachers included Dr. Glenn Price, Eduardo Leandro and DCI Hall of Fame member Thom Hannum. He has studied marimba with Leigh Howard Stevens, Gordon Stout, and She-e Wu. He was a member of the music faculty at UMass from 2007-2008 and served as the Assistant Director of Bands for the Calgary Stampede Showband from 2009-2011. He is currently the Percussion Director for Spirit of America from Orleans, Massachusetts. This is his second season as the front ensemble arranger for 7th Regiment.

Ian has worked with many ensembles including the Calgary Stampede Showband, Spirit of America, Thomas Jefferson High School, Dartmouth Indoor Percussion, United Percussion, Boston University and the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band. He was a member of the percussion staff for the Glassmen, the Magic of Orlando, Madison Scouts, Carolina Crown and the Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps. He is currently on the percussion staff for the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps.

Johnathon Bower is a freelance trombone player from Troy, MI. He is a graduate of Athens High School and Eastern Michigan University. John studied trombone, earning a B.A. in instrumental music education.

John marched at the Glassmen from 2009-2012. In 2017, John performed with RhythmX Winds, winning a WGI World Championship. He has performed with the Wayne State Orchestra from 2017-2019. Currently, John performs with the Troy Metro Symphony Orchestra and enjoys playing in an independent tuba quartet.

John began his teaching career as a private lesson instructor in 2009. From 2012-2016, John taught marching band and brass choir at Athens High School. At Athens, John spent two years as Assistant Director working with the Concert and Jazz bands. He has also been the Band Director at Gabriel Richard Catholic High School and Romulus Middle School, before deciding to pursue a career as a professional trombonist. John spent time as a visual technician and choreographer at Clio High School, Southgate Anderson High School, L’anse Creuse North High School, South Lyon High School, LSM Winds, and Eclipse Percussion. John is in his second year as director of the Divergent Performing Arts Wind Ensemble.

Ryan Reed is the percussion educator and designer currently in the Cincinnati, OH, area. He is the percussion director for West Clermont High School. The 2020 season will mark Reed’s third year on staff with Southwind Drum and Bugle Corps, and second year as front ensemble arranger. Additionally, Reed serves as a front ensemble instructor for Matrix Performing Arts (2013-current). Previously, Reed served as the front ensemble arranger for the Skyliners’ Drum and Bugle Corps (2016-17), Sunrisers Drum and Bugle Corps (2018), and White Sabers Drum and Bugle Corps (2019). He has served as the front ensemble instructor for the Empire Statesmen Drum and Bugle Corps (2009), Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps (2012), Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps (2015) and front ensemble instructor/coordinator for Capital City Percussion (2013-15). Reed is also an endorser for Innovative Percussion and is very excited to be with Southwind for the 2020 season.

Key Poulan is a composer and arranger with an expertise in the marching arts. He has written for the world’s most famous drum corps including the Santa Clara Vanguard, Mandarins, Glassmen, Spirit of Atlanta, Cascades, Spartans, Sunrisers, Hurricanes, Caballeros, Millennium (Italy), Juliana (Netherlands), Siamyth (Thailand), Star United and the Mass Brass Mini Corps. He was the wind arranger for the World Champion Chromium Winds (The Cavaliers) during their first 2 years. As the owner of Key Poulan Music, he has been recognized as one of the country’s top arrangers and composers in the area of contemporary marching band, has several concert band works to his credit.

Chad has been a passionate contributor to the pageantry arts since 1999, and prior to his current role at the Blue Knights, he arranged, coordinated, or consulted for several DCI World Championship Finalists including The Cadets, Spirit of Atlanta, Boston Crusaders, and Glassmen. An acclaimed percussion arranger, wind arranger, and program coordinator for high school and collegiate marching bands across the country, Chad’s work throughout the fall has won the hearts and minds of students, staffs, fans, and adjudicators. Accolades include many BOA Regional Championships, three silver medal finishes in Class AA at BOA Grand Nationals, and several state championship performances. He can also be seen walking across Heinz Field on game days as Creative Consultant for the Pittsburgh Steeline.

We welcome Brian Greenleaf to the Seattle Cascades as our 2020 Color Guard Designer/ Caption Supervisor. Mr. Greenleaf has instructed the Suncoast Sound Drum and Bugle Corps, the Black Gold Drum and Bugle Corps, the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps, the Cavaliers Drum and bugle Corps, and has served as the caption head for the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps. Mr. Greenleaf is also the founding director of Black Gold Winter Guard.
